Some rituals need no instructions. Others only truly unfold once you understand a few basic things — and the cacao ceremony is definitely one of them. Whether you are working with ceremonial cacao for the first time or want to deepen your practice: here you will find everything you really need to open a mindful space at home.
What do you need for a cacao ceremony?
The good news: you do not need any fancy equipment. What matters is quality, intention, and a little preparation.
- Ceremonial cacao — 100% pure, with no additives such as sugar, milk powder, or emulsifiers.
- Hot water or plant-based milk — water lets the full aroma speak for itself; plant-based milk makes it creamier.
- A bowl or a mug — traditionally a small bowl, but any mug that feels special is the right one.
- A quiet room — the most important ingredient of all.
- Your intention — What are you opening this space for?
- Optional: Palo Santo or incense sticks — helps mark the transition from everyday life.
- Silence — or music that means something to you.
How much cacao per person?
Ceremonial dose: approx. 40–50 g — the classic amount for an intense, mindful experience in group ceremonies.
Everyday dose: approx. 20–25 g — for a daily morning ritual, meditation, or focused work.
Why raw cacao?
Raw cacao — gently fermented and dried, but not industrially heated — preserves the full spectrum of natural compounds: theobromine, flavonoids, and anandamide. Industrially processed cacao undergoes high temperatures that break down some of these. For ceremony, the quality of the cacao is not a question of luxury, but the foundation.

Why does cacao open the heart?
Plant-based: Cacao contains theobromine, which has a gently stimulating effect and warmly intensifies the heartbeat. Then there is anandamide — named after the Sanskrit word for bliss, identified in cacao beans as one of the few plant sources of it at all.
Cultural-spiritual: For many Indigenous cultures, cacao has been the plant of the heart for thousands of years — a medium that helps people feel connections that remain hidden in everyday life. The cacao does nothing that is not already within you. It simply invites you to look inward and open up.
